COMMUNITY
Run Clubs in South Africa
Running is easier in company. Find a club near you: when they meet, where they start, and whether the back of the group is looked after (it should be).
Gauteng
Zoo Lake Social Run
Joburg's friendliest lap session: 5km and 10km loops around Zoo Lake every Saturday, with a picnic-blanket finish line. Big Comrades novice programme each summer.
Pace groups from 4:30 to 8:30/km, walkers welcome
Jacaranda City Harriers
Pretoria east club with a serious qualifying culture: structured marathon blocks aimed at Comrades and Two Oceans qualifiers, plus a purple-season social 10km when the jacarandas bloom.
Structured groups by goal race pace; sub-5:00 marathon squad every season
Soweto Sunrise Collective
Community-first crew running Vilakazi Street and the Orlando Towers loop at dawn. Route photography is half the culture, so bring your phone.
No one gets dropped: a sweeper runs at the back of every session
Western Cape
MustLoveHills Run Crew
Cape Town's most diverse run crew, born in 2016 when a group of friends started running hill repeats on Rhodes Drive. Training is free and community-first, the sets are hard, and the vibe is a jol. Home of the ASICS Edinburgh Drive Challenge, a fiercely contested 6km time trial raced six times a year.
Free training, all abilities: an inclusive space for runners from all walks of life
Newlands Forest Runners
Trail-leaning club running the forest contour paths and Rhodes Memorial climbs. Strong Ultra contingent: half the club has a Two Oceans blue number in the family.
Comfortable trail legs recommended; regroup points on every climb
Sea Point Striders
A social club that runs the Promenade at sunrise three times a week. Built around coffee afterwards as much as the kilometres, and most members are chasing their first Two Oceans Half.
All paces welcome: groups from 5:30 to 8:00/km, nobody runs alone
Bo-Kaap Pacers
City-bowl club famous for cobblestone hill repeats and the best post-run koesisters in Cape Town. Beginners' walk-run group starts every January.
Beginner-first: the back of the group is the heart of the club
Stellenbosch Vineyard Striders
Farm-road running between the vineyards, with student pace and post-graduate patience in equal measure. Winter trail series on the Botmaskop paths.
Two groups: brisk (under 6:00/km) and social (everyone else)
